Job Summary

The Animal Care Facility Manager will provide responsible management of the Animal Care Facility and to achieve and maintain optimum levels of animal care and husbandry through the efficient assignment and utilization of animal care and husbandry personnel, facilities, and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Research — Assist researchers/faculty with ongoing projects and recommend modifications to protocols, procedures, or techniques when appropriate. Monitor ongoing activities to ensure adherence to animal care research guidelines and protocols. Regulatory — Monitor and respond to periodic changes in federal regulations, guidelines, safety standards, novel techniques, and environmental concerns. Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for the husbandry and care of animals. Facilities — Regularly assess/coordinate/recommend facility improvements, renovations, operating procedures, and utilization and assignment of facility space. Develop and maintain SOPs for maintenance and operation of the facility and related equipment. Budget — Manage and process purchases/billing for animals, animal care per diem, supplies, and equipment. Forecast and assess budget balances and upcoming budgetary needs; participate in cost analysis programs. Track expenditures by categories. Training — Provide training for staff, investigators, students, or other personnel on the topics of animal care protocols, SOPs, techniques, safety, equipment operation, or other items associated with research, teaching or University policy. Internal Controls — Responsible for ensuring that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, reliable financial data is maintained, and applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures are adhered to.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, animal husbandry, or other related field. Three (3) years of experience in biomedical research or animal husbandry, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity. Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences (AALAS).

Preferred Qualifications

Possess considerable knowledge of animal husbandry, veterinary care, and animal management techniques and procedures. Experience with interpretation of federal and state regulations and implementation of programs/monitoring to meet regulatory requirements. Knowledge of business practices and procedures. Ability to train and supervise personnel in animal care and treatment techniques. Extremely effective time management skills. High ethical standards and values. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with researchers, administrators, and others. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Highly motivated with strong initiative to improve, update, and develop programs to meet user expectations and changing practices/regulations.
